What is TTL and what value should you set?

Marc Wagner, July 22, 2022

TTL stands for Time To Live and is specified in seconds. The value indicates how long your data in the form of packets is valid within a network before the router deletes it.

After deleting the packet, it must be requested again. So the TTL also influences the loading times of your website.

How to select the TTL value? #

When setting the TTL, you can freely choose which value you want to store. The longer the packets are available, the less often they have to be requested again. This results in faster response times.

On the web, a TTL between 1s and 24 hours is recommended. (So between 3600 and 86400 seconds).
